A new oil comes in to play now a days, canola oil.  I heard many reviews about canola oil but is it actually good for you?

First of all it is made from the plant rapeseed. This plant was used  during world war  two by creating mustard gas. The canola seed was created in the 1960’s using traditional  plant-breeding methods.  By doing this researchers and farmers were trying to make canola more palatable. Canola is grown in the prairie regions of Western Canada, with some acreage being planted in Ontario and the Pacific Northwest, and smaller volumes are also grown in the North-central and South-eastern United States. Each canola plant grows from 3 to 6 feet (1 m -2 m) tall and produces beautiful yellow flowers. As the plant matures, pods form that are similar in shape to pea pods, but about 1/5th the size. Each pod contains about twenty tiny round black or brownish-yellow seeds. Once harvested, canola seeds are crushed and the oil contained within the seed is extracted. The average canola seed is 45% oil.

Though there has been no scientific research or conclusive studies to prove this case, people have still been concerned with canola being linked to mad cow disease  and emphysema among other diseases.

Over 90% of the united states canola is a GMO, a genetically modified organism. Which studies DO show links to cancer in rats after being fed a diet of gmo corn.

On the other hand there are lots of people who disregard the gmo fact and like canola oil for its light flavor.   According to research it gives you good monoglycerid, and by getting these you help reduce the bad cholesterol in your body. This new oil even has less the saturated fat than olive or soybean oil!  It is also great for all cooking, including high heat cooking. You can use it for stir-fry’s or even grilling and with its neutral taste it will blend with it all and you wont even know it is there.

Canola is a product that is based, grown and produced in Canada. Canada and Japan use canola oil as their number one vegetable oil and the united states and mexico follow close behind. It is also found all of the world as a healthier cooking oil!

In the end what you do with canola oil is your choice. If you prefer to stay away from gmos (I suggest to) then don’t use it. But if you really don’t care enough about gmo  then go ahead and get some for the kitchen and enjoy cooking with it!
